How many times have you heard someone say that plaids and stripes don’t mix?
It’s time we chalk this up to myth once and for all. Stripes go with everything, including plaids! Contrary to popular belief, most all prints can be mixed and matched. Just keep these tips in mind.
- Match colors instead of prints. If the colors look good together the likelihood that the prints will look good together too is high! Matching colors is really a matter of personal preference, but when in doubt, you can never go wrong with black and white. They go with everything!
- Simpler and more graphic prints are easier to mix. For example, black and white strips are simple and go with just about everything. You could say they are the neutral of prints! On the other hand, graphic prints go great together as well. Complicated prints are harder to pull off, but they can look nice together, especially when you follow tip number one.
- Break up your outfit with solids. It’s perfectly fine if print-on-print-on-print is just too much for you. You can layer in some solid-colored pieces to tone things down. Also, try adding accessories to ground your look. Always remember, before you nix a look, add accessories!
- Spread your prints out across your look. If you feel like your outfit is getting a little busy, try distributing your prints more evenly by wearing one print on the top and one on the bottom. That’s not to say that you can’t put a printed jacket over a printed top. You can! But if you feel a little print top heavy, try dispersing your patterns.
It’s really as simple as that. Match prints, not colors. Use stripes as a neutral, but don’t shy away from graphic prints. Break up your look with solids. Spread your pints out. And don’t forget to accessorize!
